Botox Treatment & the Process

Botox cosmetic comes from the botulinum toxin type A; it is a refined and non-toxic protein derived from the bacterium. In the late 1980s Botox cosmetic was approved in the medical field for treating medical conditions ranging from uncontrollable blinking (blepharospasm) to hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Since 2002, Botox injections were approved for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles on the face. The next following sections will address the Botox treatment process and how Botox injections work to eliminate the appearance of forehead wrinkles and frown lines and help remove crow’s feet.

Botox Injections & the Process

Before administering Botox injections, the doctor will instruct the patient to contract their facial muscles. This is done so the doctor can best determine where to precisely place the first injection. Next, the doctor will use an ultra-fine needle to administer the Botox injections directly into the muscles that are underneath the skin. The muscles that are targeted with the Botox injections are those that cause frown lines, furrows, and horizontal forehead creases. The procedure is fast and causes minimal discomfort, so no anesthesia is required. If the client is sensitive to pain, the doctor may numb the area with a cold pack or topical anesthetic cream before administering the Botox injections.

Botox Injections & Treatment Time

The Botox treatment is performed in our cosmetic procedures rooms by our on-staff experienced doctor. The complete Botox treatment lasts about 1 hour from start to finish. The length of the treatment can vary, depending on the individual’s desired results, but the actual injection process takes no longer than 10 minutes. Since this procedure is so quick, it has become a “lunchtime” cosmetic procedure. Most clients come in on their lunch hour and go right back to work. Clients usually require no downtime and can resume their normal activities immediately after the Botox injections. Major improvement of the wrinkles usually occurs within a few days after the procedure and the improvement continues for about a month thereafter. Botox treatment results usually last about 4-6 months.

Botox Injections & How They Work

Many factors contribute to the lines and wrinkles on facial skin, including continuous facial expressions, muscle movement and aging. As you facial muscles contract, the overlying skin forms a crease. The creases in the skin become permanent furrows, wrinkles and creases over time. On the average, women have thinner, more delicate skin and typically have more expressive faces. Because of this, women are more prone to facial wrinkles.

Botox injections work by blocking the message sent from the nerves to the muscles. This prevents the muscles from contracting, therefore the wrinkles are reduced or eliminated. Clients will not have any loss of sensation resulting from Botox injections, because only the underlying muscles are affected. Regular use of Botox treatment prevents the skin from creasing and can keep new wrinkles from forming.
