Crash Diet Dangers and Effects in Brandon, Tampa, and All Over

Although dangerous, many people all over the world submit themselves to a crash diet when they want to lose those last five or ten pounds. Heading to a weekend beach trip? Crash diet. Going to your 10-year high school reunion? Crash diet. A one-time crash diet probably won’t do lasting harm to your system, but if crash dieting becomes a habit, your overall health will likely suffer. Crash dieting can sometimes bring you the results you’re looking for, but just like the crash diet itself, the results are short lived.

A crash diet, also known as fad diet, can take on different forms. There’s the grapefruit diet, the maple syrup diet, the cabbage diet, and so on. In reality, all of these diets are yo-yo diets that will have your weight fluctuating at an unhealthy rate. You may lose that initial 10 pounds, but your body isn’t shedding fat, it is actually losing water because low-calorie diets burn excess glycogen which absorbs excess fluids in the body.

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Glasgow in Scotland showed that anyone taking part in a crash diet can run the risk of shortening their life span. Researchers used stickleback fish to study how crash dieting affects the body; they found that the lifespan of the fish that underwent the crash diet lessened by 25 percent compared to the fish eating regular diets. Even worse, the crash diet side effects were graver for the fish that were still growing, leading the scientists to believe that children and teenagers who undergo a crash diet can suffer more serious harm than adults. Researchers believed the fish that went through a crash diet and then a normal diet were dying sooner because their bodies were growing erratically.

Constantly putting your body through crash diets can lead to:

  • Nutritional Deficiency—crash diets don’t provide the body with the nutrients it needs. Long-term crash diets can lead to nutritional deficiencies like iron deficiency anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, potassium deficiency and more.
  • Mental Health Issues—not eating the proper diet can lead to mood swings, depression and even anorexia and bulimia.
  • Osteoporosis—limiting your diet can also limit your calcium intake. A lack of sufficient calcium can lead to brittle bones.
