Blood Sugar, Insulin & How it Affects Weight Loss

Did You Know…

Medical researchers estimate that 90% of type 2 diabetes cases could be prevented by a combination of healthy diet and active lifestyle.

Insulin resistance is not just a blood sugar problem. It is also linked to a multitude of other problems that include: high blood pressure, high levels of triglycerides, low HDL (good) cholesterol, and excessive weight. The combination of these symptoms is so common that is has been named "Metabolic Syndrome". Along with Metabolic Syndrome or on its own, insulin resistance can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some cancers.

Genes (inherited traits), an inactive lifestyle, being overweight, and eating a high quantity of processed carbohydrates can each promote insulin resistance. Data from the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study has shown that cutting back on refined grains and eating more whole grains can improve insulin sensitivity. “Health Gains from Whole Grains” describes that the benefit of eating whole grains extends beyond insulin. It can help prevent type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis (the build-up of cholesterol that clogs and narrows artery walls), heart disease, colorectal cancer, and premature death from noncardiac, noncancer causes.
